TIPS FOR HOUSEPLANTS

This week we are offering a few general tips for houseplants.

“Padded Pots”

To keep the roots of your houseplants moist and cool during hot weather, set a potted plant, pot and all, inside another, larger pot. Fill the space between the pots with Peat Moss.

“Pot Pest Control”

Bugs won’t stick around if you do this - it is safe, economical, and uses a little recycling too!

Sprinkle pencil sharpening shavings onto the soil or place a 3-inch slice of cedar pencil into the soil for every 3 inches of pot diameter (6 inch diameter=2 slices)

“Pinecone Moisture Meter”

Mother Nature offers this - for free!

If you don’t want to go around every few days sticking your finger down in the soil of your houseplants to see if they need watering, try this:

Stick a pinecone, about two petals deep, in the soil of each of your potted plants. The petals of the cones open when the plant is dry and close when it’s wet. No more poking—this works great!

“Perk Up Your Houseplants”

Your winter weary houseplants will appreciate this:

Stick a children’s vitamin or One-A-Day vitamin into the soil of each houseplant. This will supplement the nourishment they missed from the summer sunshine

“Careful Cleaning”

Don’t use leaf shining products on your houseplants. It clogs the plant’s pores and doesn’t allow it to breathe. Instead, clean the leaves every few weeks with a damp cloth that has been soaked in warm water and wrung out.

See you next Week!
